A-F: What to Do in a Car Accident Scene

Since car accidents are unpredictable, being prepared can help you respond effectively. If you experience a car accident, follow this checklist to ensure your safety and collect key details. Because every accident is different, this guide will help you reduce the risk of injury and ensure all critical information is accurately recorded.

At the Scene (A-F Steps)
Assess Injuries & Call 911
Check yourself and others for injuries.
Call 911 if needed and avoid moving the injured unless necessary.
Be Safe & Gather Information
Take photos and video and move to a safe spot if possible.
Contact Police & Report the Accident
Call law enforcement, especially if there are injuries or property damage.
Document
Take photos of vehicles, damage, license plates, and surroundings (make sure to document other vehicle’s damage and license plate).
Note road and weather conditions.
Gather Documents: police report card with the officer’s name and report number.
Exchange Information
Get names, phone numbers, driver licenses, registration, and insurance card. ⚠️ At this time, be sure NOT TO ADMIT FAULT.
Find Witnesses
Collect contact info from witnesses, if available.
After the Accident (I-N-S Steps)
Beyond the immediate aftermath, there are additional actions to take based on the severity of the accident.
Inform Your Insurance – Report the accident within 24 hours.
Note Symptoms – Seek medical help if needed based on symptoms.
